Why is my site not showing up on Google?
The five most common reasons a site does not appear on Google, and how to check and fix each one yourself, step by step.
Most often, a site does not appear on Google for one of these reasons: it is too new and has not been indexed yet, it carries a stray "noindex" tag, it has no Google Business Profile, the content is too thin, or you are simply searching the wrong way. Most of these can be checked in a few minutes and fixed without deep technical knowledge. Let us take them one at a time.
First: check whether Google can see your site at all (30 seconds)
Type this into Google: site:yourdomain.com (substituting your own domain).
- Do pages appear? Then the site is indexed, and the problem is that it does not appear for the words you are searching, not that it is missing. Skip to reasons 4 and 5.
- Nothing at all? Google has not indexed your site yet. Carry on with reasons 1 and 2.

1. The site is too new and Google has not found it yet
A new site can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks to be indexed. To speed that up:
- Create a Google Search Console account and submit your
sitemap.xml. - Use "Inspect URL" and then "Request indexing" for the pages that matter.
- Make sure something links to your site (your Business Profile, social media, a local directory), so Google finds it sooner.
2. You have a stray "noindex" tag
The most common technical cause: a setting telling Google "do not index this site". It appears frequently when a site has been left in development mode by accident. On WordPress, check Settings then Reading and make sure "Discourage search engines" is not ticked. If you are unsure, this is exactly the kind of thing someone technical can check in a minute.
3. You have no Google Business Profile
For a local business, the free Google Business Profile is often the first thing that appears, in the map and in the results, ahead of the website itself. If you have not created and verified one, you are absent from the most visible part of Google. It takes roughly a quarter of an hour to set up at business.google.com.
4. The content is too thin or too general
Google cannot show a site for a word the site does not contain. If all you have is a page saying "Welcome" and a phone number, there is very little to be found for. Say clearly what services you offer, for whom, and in which area, for example "custom website design for dental practices", not merely "web services".
5. You are searching wrongly: appearing is not the same as ranking first
Very often the site does appear, but on page two or three. Nobody can guarantee first place, and for highly competitive words it takes time. Start with realistic, local terms (your city plus your service), where competition is lower and the customers are nearer to you.
How long until you appear?
It depends heavily on the site, the competition, and how often you publish. As a rough guide rather than a promise:

The numbers vary case by case. Anyone promising you "guaranteed first place by tomorrow" is not telling the truth.
