I run a small business. Do I really need a website?

In short: yes, even a small business benefits from at least a simple site, even a single page. It builds credibility, it is yours (unlike a social media page), and it helps you appear on Google. How large it needs to be depends on your objectives, but having a base of your own is almost always worth it.

A site, however small, gives you credibility

When somebody hears about your business, their first instinct is to look you up. If they find nothing, or only an abandoned Facebook page, a question mark forms in their mind. A website, even a simple one, immediately says you are a real, settled business worth trusting.

It does not need to be complicated. A single clean page with:

  • what you do and for whom,
  • a few real projects or reviews,
  • clear contact details and a form,

already makes an enormous difference against "there is nothing". The first few seconds count for a great deal, which I wrote about in first impressions online.

The site is yours, social media is only rented

Plenty of people starting out rely solely on Facebook or Instagram. It is a reasonable starting point, but it has one important weakness: those accounts do not belong to you. The platform decides who sees your posts, and it can restrict or suspend your page at any time, sometimes through a simple automated error.

A website, by contrast, is your own house online. The domain, the content and your customers' contact details stay yours, whatever some platform decides tomorrow.

Ideally you have both: social media for daily presence, and the site as the stable base you control.

On Google, a simple site makes you visible

Think about how people search: they type "bakery near me" or "plumber" plus their town. That is the moment the decision gets made. A social media page rarely appears well in those results, whereas a well-built site with the right pages for your service and your area is exactly the instrument new customers find you through.

Without a site, you risk being invisible precisely where people are searching with a clear intention to buy. A small local business has a great deal to gain by appearing when someone nearby searches for exactly what it offers.

It does not have to be large or expensive

This is the good news. A first website is not a huge, costly project. For many small businesses a single well-considered page is enough to start:

  • state clearly what you offer,
  • show a few proofs of trust,
  • and make the step to contact you easy.

You can start small and grow over time as the business grows. What matters is that the page is clean and made with care, rather than improvised in a hurry. You can read about what a site that genuinely works for you looks like on the website design page.

When you could reasonably wait

To be honest about it, there are situations where you can hold off a while. If you are only testing an idea, have not yet defined a clear service, or have a very tight budget this particular month, a free Google Business Profile plus an active social media page is a perfectly reasonable first step. They make you visible quickly, at no cost.

But treat that as a starting point rather than a long-term foundation. The moment you want to be found seriously on Google, look professional and turn visitors into customers, a base of your own becomes the natural next step.

In conclusion

Even for a small business, the answer leans clearly towards yes. A site, even a simple single-page one, gives you credibility, control and visibility that rented platforms cannot. It does not have to be large to count.

Frequently asked

My business is very small. Do I really need a site?

In most cases, yes, at least a simple one. It gives you credibility when people look you up, it is yours unlike a social media page, and it helps you appear on Google. It does not have to be large to be useful.

How big should a first website be?

It can be very small. For many businesses a single clear page, with what you offer, a few proofs of trust and a contact form, is enough to start. You can grow the site over time as the business develops.

Can I rely on Facebook and Instagram alone at the start?

At the start, social media plus a Google Business Profile makes you visible quickly and at no cost. But those accounts do not belong to you, and they barely appear in Google searches. A website remains the base you own and the thing that gets you found when people are actively looking.

I do not have much budget right now. What can I do?

You can start with a simple, clean page rather than a costly project, then add pages as the business grows. What matters is that the first page is made with care rather than in a hurry, because it forms the first impression of your business.
