What are a domain, hosting and an SSL certificate?

In short: the domain is your site's address, the name people type into a browser (yourname.com, for instance). Hosting is where the site's files actually live, on a server keeping them running day and night. And the SSL certificate is what makes the address start with "https" and secures the data travelling between a visitor and the site. All three are needed for a site to exist and work.

They are intimidating terms at first glance, but the logic behind them is simple. Let us take them one at a time, with examples, and see why a website carries a cost that returns every year.

The domain: your site's address

The domain is the name people type to reach you, for example yourname.com. Think of it like a street address or a phone number: it is what you tell customers so they can find you.

A domain is not bought once and kept forever. It is leased for a period, usually a year, and has to be renewed to stay yours. As long as you keep renewing it, nobody else can use it.

Hosting: where the site lives

If the domain is the address, hosting is the land and the building you put at that address. Your site is made of files (text, images, code) and those have to sit somewhere, on a specialised computer called a server, running around the clock.

When someone types your domain into a browser, it is the hosting server that sends the pages to their screen. Without hosting, the domain would be an address leading nowhere. Hosting is paid periodically, because the server consumes power and maintenance every day of the year.

The SSL certificate: the padlock securing the data

The SSL certificate is what turns the address from "http" into "https" and lights up the little padlock you see next to it in the browser. Its job is to encrypt the information travelling between a visitor and the site, so a contact form or an order's details cannot be read by anyone in between.

Why a website has a recurring annual cost

This is the part many people do not anticipate: a website is not a one-off expense. To stay online and secure, it carries several costs that return each year:

• The domain. An annual renewal, a small but constant sum, to keep the address.
• Hosting. Payment for the server keeping the site running around the clock.
• The SSL certificate. Maintaining the secure "https" connection.
• Backups. Regular saves, so you can restore quickly if something breaks.
• Updates. Security renewals and small adjustments that keep the site fast and protected.

Think of them as rent and upkeep on a space. You pay once for the construction, then pay steadily to keep it functioning and safe. A site left without these becomes slow, vulnerable, or simply disappears from the internet over time.

Is an SSL certificate mandatory?

In practice, yes. Without one, browsers show your site as "Not secure", which drives visitors away and can affect your position in Google. Beyond that, any site receiving data through forms ought to protect it. Fortunately, SSL is usually included in the hosting package.

Can I buy the domain myself?

What happens if the domain expires?
